It couldn't be said to be real sleep, no last he slept it had been on fresh shrine on fresh corpse, and when Gurata woke, the world was changed. Still, he woke from the pale echo of that fateful sleep. A low rumble to greet the sun beetles pulling the sun chariot, morning's howl split the sky as the two sun wolves began their cursed chase.
Weak and faint was the gratitude Gurata felt from the warming charms Fionko had given out last night. Speaking of her... a sign would have to be left to her. Those murky eyes with trace of fire scanned the treeline, amid the cherry trees, a most corpulent bird.
Clearly this pigeon had profited well from Edolin being exposed to the outsider god Aquagon's fish and chips franchise, Deep One's Deep Ones, or Dds as the kids called it.
Gurata had to admit, it was surprisingly fine fare for peasant food. Pushing thoughts of chips and oddly fishy fish from his mind, he spat blood accurately at the pigeon.
Not having utterly lost his touch, the divine ichor struck the bird right on the head. It fell from its perch of course, but before it hit the ground, it floated and underwent a miraculous transformation, a glittering boar's head replacing its old one, and with that the light of greater will and wisdom was in the birdboar.
"My worship and thanks for the gift of uplifting my Lord"
The servant bowed low, wings spread out.
Gurata had need to inform Fionko he'd be away on business, so this would do nicely. Now it was certainly in character with quite a few gods to willfully create a servant for a random one-time purpose, but Gurata had a little more behind his action than that. It would be good to have a servant around now that he had determined to rise again. Instructing the servant on what to tell Fionko, particularly telling it to not mind whatever strange antics she got up to, Gurata left the shrine, trepidation entering is heart forming CAUTION.
He didn't rush, and soon he came upon it. The site of one of his greatest humiliations.
That new work of the foreign outsiders, the highway.
Magic carriages, simply called cars sped this way and that. Gurata would not go on the road.
He scowled at the cars, causing a few drivers to wobble alarmingly.
How fragile they were, and to think how expensive. He still resented how many treasures were lost back then through sorcery of the outsider's strange laws.
With a distainful snort, he trotted off towards Brother Snake's shrine. So it was on that day that the local altarweb was filled with video and pictures of a boar god moving briskly alongside a road. Would Gurata have been sad to hear the webians wondering who this god was?
Without incident Gurata came to the shrine of Omagda, Brother Snake. Looking at it one would be forgiven for thinking it shrouded in fog. Gurata breathed in deep. Incence.
He felt some divine vigor return to his diminished self. Brother Snake must have known he wouldn't accept such aid, and so flooded the area with ambrosial incence. Likely he had sent all his devotees, and incidental mortals away.
As Gurata entered the fog, he heared once more that soft and annoyingly gentle voice.
"I have sent all away, so that none may see your wretched state, have you finally decided to cleave to this age brother? Late, you come to it so late"
Venomous consideration, caress and lash in one.
"I'll cleave through it!" Gurata proudly declared, passing through tori that even shrouded in fog were festooned with the adoration of mortals.
A hissing laugh.
"Just have a care not to cleave through their laws!, Brother Boar, nobody wants to bail you out again, so what brings you here? What could it be..."
A shadow of a snake coiled before Gurata.
Brother Snake would not take humanoid form before one who had lost that power. Gurata was a little disgruntled, but CAUTION won out over temper.
"I came for advice" he muttered quietly and quickly.
"Hmmm, what was that? I have no ears, only earholes in this form, what did you say"
He heard just fine.
"I came to seek your wisdom, as to how I could reinstate myself"
Omagda teased no longer, lest he have pulled pork.
"I have just the right gift for that"
A small glittering slab floated out, stopping before Gurata. Ruby on one side, and something like obsidian mirror on the other.
"The mortals call it a phone"
"Isn't this a wonder of the outsider"
"It is, will you refuse it?"
Silently, Gurata hid the gift beyond the bristles in his hair placing it in that space where god are wont to put this and that.
"Thank you Brother Snake"
"You're quite calm today, all those days atop tori haven't robbed you of your fire have they?"
Gurata snorted sparks, threatening to ignite the incense.
"Ah, the fault is mine, my gift should cover the wisdom you need, but before you consult it, hasn't it been some time since last we shared a drink?"
It had.
So, they drank.
Among others of their siblings, there would be hustle, bustle and cheer, but the awkward pair of Snake and Boar had always drunk together in silence.
After conflicts of youth, they learned it was the best for them.
The sky was obscured, but for a moment, so too was the Gate-Tower. For a while, it was as if he was back in simpler times, where his valiant siblings guided and protected the people of Edolin from oni and disaster.
"Those days are gone, and even if not for the outsiders, those days would still be gone. We must look forward brother, or who will be left in front of the mortals?"
Gurata merely silently nodded at these words that Omagda left him as he left the shrine to return to his own.
As it turned out, he was just in time to prevent Fionko from plucking the new servant in preparation of cooking it.
If the Moonhare had been up to see it, he'd have surely laughed.
What will you do when next the chase of the skies begins again, O declined god of fire and blood?
