Today's promptling release is the above Memory…
One hundred releases. That's a good number of days. Just a little bit of writing and a little bit of sculpting, each day, except for the displays. In the positive it's good practice, and fun too. In the negative it's this teller's fingers straining to keep hold of the edge of the Pit of Despair of Inaction. He doesn't want back in the pit, though his wings are yet bound, his coat filthy, his eyes murky…
Finally he’s moving forward again.
But that's the creator, and not the creation, and for mortals, the creation, be it works or children are the greater.
To speak of the creation, well…
Make sure to skip this teller’s interpretation below if you don't want yours to be influenced!
Alternative: Memory
It's likely the first of things that many children make. A thin tube. A snake. How did it come to be a Fang snake? Was it the childish obsession with originality he had? The bats too, became fang bats. There were regular snakes and bats. Bats were a favourite.
Was it a sibling that made gingerbread men first? Likely, there was quite a few siblings after all, before they made no more, leaving him alone teasing out dreams into shapes. Originally the gingerbread men were made with orange plasticine. Did he not have brown? To be fair, most of the gingerbread men he ate were more orange brown than chocolate brown. Ginger biscuits too, are orangish. Alas the orange he has currently is a bit too luminous. It really doesn't look right so brown. Perhaps he was dunked in chocolate after baking?
The coneman though, the memory of when that simple creature was made escapes, but it wasn't a thing seen before or read before. A simple cone with two blobby feet.
There's a painting of dogs playing poker, there's paintings on that theme.
If you were to paint this teller's soul, you’d get a scene like that, though it’d be snap most likely rather than poker. Canasta would be nice too.
In the sculpted scene, it's tiles though instead of cards. Of course you could view it as teeth.
What is Morning Menagerie?
Each morning, this teller will release a little critter, of varying colours out into the wilds of substack.
A little promptling, if you will. The prompt is the image above itself, it can be a little story, an ode or merely the kind of description you might find in a bestiary. There's a few different categories for this.
Sighting
Is either something like a haiku, a limerick or a wee story between 50-100 words
Encounter
A challenging battle (for the writer) of 800-1500 words.
Recapture
For this, words are optional, simply recreate the prompted critter in whatever medium you desire, crude doodles are acceptable. Even AI generated pictures are acceptable, but do state they are such, some critters should prove quite tricky to wrangle a program into recreating.
The Menagerie Display
Each Saturday, instead of a release, this teller will gather up one of each day’s release in a post for display. Consequently, UNTIL SATURDAY, you can do a piece for any of the released promptlings, not just that day’s. Note that this is merely for the Display. The prompt police aren't real and can't hurt you, so nobody can stop you from excavating a month old prompt from anywhere, shine on you crazy star!
On Restacking
Be sure to say its menagerie morning, and mention
if you want to try for the Sunday Display. Do be sure to restack others if you see them helping the promptling on its way. Thanks for reading, this snowflake will melt soon!
